Sparky's Visit

The West Memphis Fire Department and Sparky came to Maddux this week to teach us about fire safety.

We learned to look for things in our home that are fire hazards.  Families also need to have a meeting place outside the house to know everyone is safe in case of a fire.

A fireman put on his fire-fighting gear to let us know what he would look like if he entered our house during a fire.  We also got to hear how he would sound.

Thank you to the West Memphis Fire Department and Sparky for helping us learn about fire safety!

This year half of our language arts grade is from decodable text assessments.  These consist of nonsense words.  Students are to blend the sounds together to say the word.
Some examples:  flup, kuz, shap, zash
Please listen to your child read these.  I have assigned them for Monday and Wednesday's homework.  It would be beneficial to go over these every night.

Daily 5

During our literacy block each day we have Daily 5.  This is our center time while some students have small group time with me.

Daily 5 consists of Read to Self, Read to Someone, Listen to Reading, Word Work and Work on Writing.

Read to Self:
Students read from their book bag.  They may sit in scoop chairs or on a rug to read.  They are reading independently and working on reading stamina.

Read to Someone:
Students read to someone from their book bag.  They sit elbow to elbow and knee to knee and take turns reading.  They may take turns reading the same book or each may take a turn reading their own book.

Listen to Reading:

Picture coming soon.
Students get on chromebooks and log in to their MobyMax account.  They listen to stories on the computer.

Word Work:
These students are making their spelling words with letter tiles.  During word work they practice spelling words and sight words with games and different activities.

Work on Writing:
Students practice writing with different activities.  She is using cards and making lists of various items.  We will also be doing some holiday writing activities soon.

This is a peek into some of our morning literacy activities.
