Graphs and Spelling Classroom Activities
We were busy before Thanksgiving learning about graphs in math. We used information, or data, to complete graphs. We learned about picture graphs and bar graphs.
Each week when we are working on our spelling words we do different activities. Two of the students' favorite activities are sorting the word cards in the pocket chart and playing "Beat the Teacher". The word cards are passed out to the students. They read their word to their partner and decide where it will go in the pocket chart. For "Beat the Teacher" I sort the words in the pocket chart and they time how long it takes me to sort them. Then I time the students and see if anyone can beat my time. They are really good at this game and love beating me.

Telling Time, Book It and Sparky
We have been busy with telling time. This is a skill that can be tricky. Please review this with your child. We will continue to review this from time to time. I only took one picture because we were so busy learning that I forgot!
In October we always begin Book It. This is a program where your child can earn a free pan pizza from Pizza Hut for reading. Each month I will send home a form for your child to fill out with the books they read. The goal for October is 8 books. Please sign the form when they are finished. I will give them a coupon when they return it to me! Kymille was the first student to return her form and get her pizza coupon. Several other students have brought their form back now. You have until the last day of the month to return it.
Maddux always enjoys when Sparky and the firefighters come to teach about fire safety. We had a good time learning about smoke detectors, 911, not going back into the house for anything and to stop, drop, and roll. Tamiria even got to go on stage and dance with Sparky. Thank you Sparky and the West Memphis Fire Department!!
Catching up on activities -- Shape Monsters, Tangrams, Tangram pictures
This is a post to catch up on some of the activities we have been doing in the classroom. I posted pictures of us working on our shape monsters. Below are some pictures of the completed monsters. We also wrote a description of our monsters.
We also have used tangrams to learn about shapes.
The class used the tangrams several days to make different shapes. They used the seven pieces of the tangram to create a picture. Below are some of the pictures we made. They include a cat, fish, house and candle.
Next post will be about Book It, Sparky, and telling time.

Squares and Cubes
Yesterday we continued our study of shapes. In this lesson we first made a square out of mini marshmallows and toothpicks. We made another square and then connected the two squares with more toothpicks. We then had a cube!! We described its attributes like we did last week with our other shapes. The students counted the edges, vertices, and faces. It was a lot of fun. Of course, we had to eat the extra marshmallows when we were done!!
Shape Monsters
Last week in math we described shapes by their attributes. We talked about how many sides and angles each shape had. We looked at triangles, quadrilaterals, hexagons, and pentagons. On Friday we made a shape monster. This week we will write and describe our monster and hang them in the hall.
It takes a lot of concentration to cut, glue and decide how you want your monster to look!! |
I think the students had a great time making their shape monster. This activity came from Amy Lemons at Step Into Second Grade. I will post a picture when they complete their description of their monster and we hang them in the hall.
